A side note from the seventh game, Federer lost another challenge on a line call — that's five so far in this match.

We've finally found something he is rubbish at. A brilliant backhand winner on the run hands Federer two break points in the fifth game — a crucial moment in the match.

But the year-old somehow nets from close range to spurn the first, and a wild forehand long sees the second pass by.

You have to admire the man from Japan, he's hanging on to his Wimbledon dream by his fingertips. Another service game and another test, but once again Nishikori digs deep.

He will not be bowed — not least because he doesn't want to be outdone by someone in Federer who is wearing the exact same kit as himself.

This should be named the Uniqlo derby, given they are both in identical shirts, shorts, socks and even headbands. It means the underdog has to rely too much on his attacking strokes from the baseline, and there is only so long that can continue without hitting problems.

An overule by the umpire leads it to and Nishikori then lashes in a return of serve to secure an unlikely break. But he fires long at the crucial moment, and Federer then takes the game on to set point.

Somehow he missed an easy drive volley wide of court on that one, but with an identical shot he does complete the job at the second attempt.

Excellent response from Nishikori, who needing to hold to stay in the set, produces his best service game for a long time.

He takes it to 15, and the players sit down to ponder the decider after the changeover. It's scary how quickly Fed goes about his game when he's on song, and there is barely a pause between points before he reloads and lets swing.

His first serve is not exactly firing right now and that is putting too much pressure on his second serve with Federer at the other end waiting to thump down a reply.

The second seed secures two break points, but then is denied the first by going long at the end of a 19 shot rally.

And an ace on a much needed first serve keeps Nishikori alive on the second. A third comes and goes for the Japanese player, before Federer misses one of those second serve returns to hand Nishikori game point.

But there's work to do yet as Fed whips a forehand pass down the line to bring them back to deuce. Federer again rescues a game point before sending a blistering backhand down the court to secure a fourth break point of the game, and this time his positive mood pays off with the winner.

It's becoming so routine I should just cut and paste this — but Federer holds serve again with ease.

Fair enough he threw in one double fault at , but that only delayed the inevitable. This set is rattling on apace. He may be facing an onslaught from one of the greatest to ever walk on a court, but Nishikori is refusing to buckle.

He comes from to take the next three points to hold. Five times Federer faced break point in the first set, so much pressure was he under.

Not now though, as he hardly lets his opponent get a look-in. The Swiss holds to 15, and has the face of someone who is totally into this match now.

Nishikori knows he needs to raise it again. Federer wrestled control back in the match by pegging Nishikori deeper in the court, but his opponent has come out more positive in the third and is being rewarded.

He looks to have steadied the ship somewhat and completes his hold as he gets back to serve and volley. There's life left in him yet.

The dominance of the second set has led to Nishikori standing way back to receive the Federer serves, which is causing him problems being sent out wide.

Federer moves his opponent around at will and easily holds. It's a quick turnaround for the star from Japan, and he's back with ball in hand.

Such a crucial stage of the match, as Nishikori needs to regather his thoughts and get back to the levels he was playing at in the opening set.

But straight away Federer has his man under the cosh, taking the first two points. On game point to the Japanese, both trade blows at high pace, and Federer comes through to take it to deuce.

He then finds a blistering forehand into the backhand corner to set up the break, countered by an ace from Nishikori.

Another game point goes begging for the underdog, who is being tested to the limit here by his idol, and then they return to deuce for a fourth time.

But at the fifth time of asking, it's a vital hold for Nishikori. That was some opener to the third set. Nishikori is taking deep breaths as he is given the runaround once again, and Federer knows his man is there for the taking.

Other than a miss into the tramlines, Federer plays the perfect game to break to 15 as he forces Nishikori out time and time again. Interestingly, Nishikori's top spin forehand average speed has dropped from 77mph in the first set to 69mph in this second.

Roger faced five break points in the first set, he is yet to drop a single point on serve in the second so far.
